FAQ

  • Will my knife rust?
Yes. It’s made of high carbon steel. This particular type of steel is prone to rusting very quickly if left sitting and wet for longer than 5 or 10 minutes so it is very important to take care if it carefully.
  • How do I stop my knife from rusting?
Clean with soap and water and wipe it dry after use. Do not let your carbon steel knife sit in a sink of dirty dishes. It will rust, and fast. Between cutting different items wipe the blade down with a damp cloth. Once you have finished all your cutting tasks wash the blade seperatly with soap and water and dry it on a dry kitchen towel. Once you are sure it is dry place it back into the case it came in.
  • How do I remove rust from the blade?
If your knife does rust (reddish colour) you can remove it with a few methods. If the rusting is light and very recent ( think 30 minutes) simple soap, water and a coarse sponge should remove it. If it is more severe, baking soda and an old toothbrush should do the trick. For the worst of it, some high grit sandpaper (1000 grit is recommended)
  • My blade is turning blue or discoloured (but not rusting) is this ok?
It is most definitely ok. In fact this is what makes high carbon steel so interesting. The bluish hue you are seeing is called a Patina. A patina is a type of natural of protective coating that forms when a high carbon steel knife is in regular use and contact with acidic items. Like Lemons, potatoes, onions ect. Depending on what you cut most regularly and how you cut it, the patina formed on your knife will be unlike any other knife of the same material. It also acts as a protective layer on the blade to prevent the red rust from forming. Over time your knife will have it's own unique pattern formed from the patina.
